Our Story
We don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.Ancient Proverb
Hailing from starkly different environments, Montana and Manhattan, we bring our respective experiences to our daily work. We understand that the precious natural resources around us are limited and that structures, where Americans spend over 90% of their time, consume 40% of energy used in the US and 72% of electricity generated.
We are committed to not only improving the energy performance of the spaces where we all live and work, but we also have a keen focus on making those spaces healthier. From access to natural light, to indoor air quality, to materials that are not toxic for humans, we believe humans should spend their time in healthy buildings that are good for them while also being good for our planet.
Sustaining Structures improves the performance of existing buildings and advises on the development of high performing new buildings. Our focus is resource effectiveness; energy, water, air quality, and humans!
Collaboration is key to the success of our business model. As we grow, we enable other businesses to grow along with us. We keep overhead costs down by bringing appropriate talent to projects on an as needed basis.
As a social venture, we are also invested in bringing young professionals into the green economy. We do this through internships, training, and partnerships with local community colleges. Our creative staffing model allows us to pass savings on to our clients.
