In this era of energy efficiency there are various labels, awards and certifications that buildings can achieve. After defining your goals, Sustaining Structures works with you to determine which designation makes sense for your building, from a financial, public relations, and feasibility perspective. Because Energy Star is the foundation of energy benchmarking and LEED is one of the most rigorous of labels to achieve, Sustaining Structures is both an Energy Star Partner and has in house LEED expertise.
LEED and Energy Star are complimentary to each other. Buildings may be both LEED certified and Energy Star rated, and LEED requires Energy Star as part of its EB (Existing Building) rating system.
Energy Star was created by the EPA in 1992 and provides commercial building owners with strategic energy management plans designed to benefit both the environment and the owner’s bottom line. Energy Star is designed to measure a building’s performance, create practical operating (energy use) benchmarks/goals, help monitor performance and also reward energy efficiency.
The national energy performance rating is a type of external benchmark that helps energy managers assess how efficiently their buildings use energy, relative to similar buildings nationwide. The rating system’s 1–100 scale allows everyone to quickly understand how a building is performing — a rating of 50 indicates average energy performance, while a rating of 75 or better indicates top performance. Top performing buildings with a score of 75 or higher qualify for the Energy Star Label.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) provides building owners and operators with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.

LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building, home or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
